This lecturer examines the capabilities and limitations of the forensic science disciplines of firearms identification and tool mark identification from the prosecutor’s perspective.  Emphasis will be given to: the various kinds of evidence associated with shooting cases; the types of examinations that should be requested of the crime laboratory; what can and cannot be determined by the examinations; how the results of the examinations can be most effectively presented in the courtroom; what types of items should be collected and preserved as evidence; preparing the firearms expert for direct and cross examination; and other practical information that the firearms examiner, while giving an overview of firearms, can provide to assist in more effective investigation/ prosecution of these cases.

The presenter will also focus on the types of firearms you will commonly see with violent crime cases, the differing ways they function; the variety of types of wounds cause by each; as well as any new cutting-edge weaponry that you may begin to see in your jurisdictions.
